CHECKING YOU NETWORK SETTINGS:
At some point you may need to check your network settings for your connection to your LAN. To check your network properties using Microsoft Windows® 95 or 98 follow the steps below:

WINDOWS 95, WINDOWS 98:
1. First of all, close down all open applications.
2. Click on the START button, navigate to 'Settings', then 'Control Panel'.
3. Once the Control Panel is open, double click on 'Network' icon.
4. This opens up the Network Properties window, in here you will see a number of items displayed that are set up as either network adaptors (physical devices enabling the connection of you computer to a network), network protocols (system settings enabling the connection of your computer to a network).
5. Find the settings for TCP/IP, click on this to select, then click the 'Properties' button.
6. The window that open up will have a number or tabs along the top, including DNS Configuration, Gateway, IP Address and Bindings.
7. Make a note of the settings for DNS Configuration, including Host, Domain and DNS Server Search Order.
8. Next click on the Gateway tab at the top of this window, make a note of of the IP address thats displayed here (the IP address is usually a series of numbers and full stops ie. 100.58.100.58).
9. Next click on the IP Address tab at the top of this window. This opens up the IP properties window, depending on your server setup it could be configured in 2 different ways:
a. Obtain an IP address automatically could be selected, in which case the server assigns the workstation a unique IP address every time its connected to the network.
b. Specify An IP Address, means you have to enter your IP address manually, this follows the same format as above (a series of number and full stops).
Make a note of the settings here.
10. Click on the Bindings tab, make a note of any settings listed here.
11. To exit the Network settings without affecting any changes click Cancel, if you click OK you may be prompted to restart your computer.

WINDOWS XP:
1. Click on START.
2. Click on 'Connect to', select 'Show all connections'.
3. If there is more than one connection (perhaps a dial up or VPN connection) look for the icon labelled Local Area Connection.
4. Double click this icon.
5. Click Properties.
6. Click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option and click Properties.
7. Under the General tab your network settings are shown, they will either be set to 'Obtain automatically' or 'Use the following IP address'.
8. If they are set to 'use the following IP address amke a note of all the settings.
9. If they are aet to obtain automatically you will need to continue onto step 10
10. Click on START
11. Click on Run
12. Type in cmd, click OK
13. In the box that opens up, type in: ipconfig/all
14. The command prompt will display all your network settings - technicalsupport will need to know IP address, Gateway and DNS settings, amake a note of these.
